Connecticut facts and history plus travel and tourism information.
Connecticut was occupied by Mohegan indigenous people before English Puritans settled there in 1633. Nicknamed "The Constitution State" for the colony's Fundamental Orders of 1639, Connecticut actually became the fifth state to ratify the United States Constitution on January 9, 1788, following the Revolutionary War. Before the War, agriculture was the base of the economy. As the Industrial Revolution progressed, manufacturing became prominent in the state. Today, Connecticut has thriving aerospace and military equipment industries, is a major insurance and banking center, and hosts an important naval submarine base.
Connecticut is a quaint colonial New England state. Beaches, wildlife, and easy access to the Long Island Sound shoreline attract visitors. The 1954 USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, is displayed at the U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum in Groton. Visitors to Connecticut can also immerse themselves in 19th century maritime life at the historic Mystic Seaport.
