Vermont facts and history plus travel and tourism information.
Vermont is noted for its rugged mountains, pristine lakes and rivers, and picturesque dairy farms. Vermont remains a fairly rural state, although its cities and towns have modernized and developed dramatically during the last 30 years.
Prior to European exploration, the Abenaki people lived throughout the Vermont region. The state was named for its green mountains (vert mont in French) by Samuel de Champlain in 1609. During the Revolutionary War, The Green Mountain Boys fought to keep Vermont independent from Massachusetts and New Hampshire. On March 4, 1791, Vermont joined the original colonies as the 14th state.
The Green Mountains, the Connecticut River, Lake Champlain, and the Appalachian Trail provide recreational opportunities for tourists. Burlington features an international airport, and car ferries cross Lake Champlain to New York State. The Trapp Family Lodge, founded by the von Trapps of "Sound of Music" fame, offers Austrian style hospitality in the mountains near Stowe. Hiking, skiing, and boat cruises out of Burlington are among popular pastimes in Vermont, and the capital city of Montpelier offers other activities.
